Enjoy every moment of the life!!
Sometimes I wish I could go back and undo the major mistakes of my life. Then I remember how many of my biggest lessons came from exactly those mistakes.
Sometimes I wish I could go back into the past and undo all the major mistakes of my life. And then, on the contrary, I feel happy about them, because I learnt so many of my biggest lessons from exactly those mistakes.
Both of those are true at once, and I have stopped trying to resolve it. You can wish something had not happened and still be grateful for what it made you. That is not a contradiction. That is just what it is like to have lived a while.
People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing - that’s why we recommend it daily.
Stay positive, and think of yourself as strong. Stay happy in a way that you actually feel from the inside, not the way you perform for other people.
The rule of three
Try a thing you haven’t done THREE TIMES.
Once, to get over the fear of doing it. Twice, to learn how to do it. And a third time, to figure out whether you actually like it or not.
The first time you try something new, you will be bad at it and it will feel uncomfortable - but afterwards you are no longer afraid of it, which is most of the barrier gone. The second time, do the same thing so you can learn properly how to do it well. And by the third time, you will know whether you like it.
I keep coming back to this one because of how much it protects you from a specific mistake: quitting after one attempt and concluding you are not a person who does that thing.
Almost nobody enjoys anything the first time. The first time is all fear and clumsiness and being watched. You are not judging the activity, you are judging your own discomfort, and those are completely different things.
Give anything three tries before you decide. You will keep a few things you would otherwise have written off - and you will also drop some things with a clear conscience, which is just as valuable.
Dance, not wrestling
As I always say, life has ups and downs, and we have experienced both. Though you can’t always control what happens outside you, you can choose how you respond.
The best thing is to treat life as a dance rather than a wrestling match.
I love that comparison more the older I get. In a wrestling match there is a winner and the whole thing is about force - you decide what should happen and then fight the situation until it agrees. In a dance you are responding. The music does what it does, and your part is to move well with it.
Most of the exhaustion I have felt in life came from wrestling something that was never going to be pinned. Other people’s opinions. Timing. Things that had already happened.
You can become an active participant rather than a victim of circumstance, and the difference between those two is not how much control you have. It is whether you are working with the situation or against the fact that it exists.
Remember: always have a positive approach towards your life.
So learn to enjoy every moment of it. Never lose hope. Be strong and feel strong!!
Enjoying it is a skill
Finally, something I did not understand when I wrote this: enjoying your life is a skill, not a circumstance.
You have met people with very little who seem to squeeze something out of every ordinary day, and people with a great deal who cannot seem to locate an hour of pleasure in a month. That difference is not luck. It is practice - noticing, savouring, actually being where you are instead of narrating it or photographing it.
Like any skill it grows with use and fades without it. So use it on small things, often. Waiting for occasions big enough to deserve it is exactly how people end up out of practice by the time one arrives.
